Mike is an aging reclusive misanthrope who divides his time between Maine and Florida. He plays golf badly and fishes with no success whatsoever. The rest of the time he shares his ill will with anyone who will read or listen. He has always held the view that the world is going to hell in a handbasket, and now takes perverse pleasure in seeing that it is true.
Peggy is a much younger, energetic optimist who is always seeking out new opportunities to enjoy life and better herself. She is a certified aerobics instructor, a personal trainer, and has just completed the training and experience requirements to become a certified Master Gardener. She is steadfastly devoted to Mike due to certain compromising photographs that he keeps in a safe place.
