We have been here for about five years now as full time residents…snowbirds no longer. I really do miss my life in Maine but am happy that I still have wonderful friends there and and can go back and visit as time and money allow.

Living in Florida…it’s different, very different. The traffic is awful (what we originally left California to get away from) and the summer weather is hot, very hot. But it’s Florida, what did we expect?

People say you’ll get used to the heat; not! I don’t think I ever will. They also say, spend your time indoors in the A/C. And so we do, ‘Googling’ our hearts (and minds) out. Playing all the solitaire we can stomach and then some, slowly becoming ‘desk chair potatoes’.

After about two years of living in Paradise I was getting bored so I suggested we get a camper of some sort so that we could head out for 2 or 3 day trips from time to time to get out of the rut we were both getting into. Mike agreed and so the search began. We ended up with a wonderful little house on wheels which we prefer to call our Casita; mainly because that is the name of our little house on wheels.

Our Casita.

We thoroughly enjoyed our little camper and visited many of Florida State Parks and took a two week trip to the Georgia mountains to get away, for a bit, from the summer heat. We were enjoying our forays into the woods so much that we decided to get more serious; thinking more and longer trips.

At this point a little more room, particularly for sleeping, was coming to the top of our wish list. We decided to move up to a bigger trailer and therefore a bigger hauling vehicle. We put the Casita on Craigslist and waited for the right buyer to come along, one that was willing to pay the market price and also really, really wanted a Casita. We were quite fond of her by now and a little sorry to let her go. Meanwhile we found the towing vehicle of our dreams and went ahead with that purchase. Eventually we were contacted by the right couple and made the deal. Now the search for just the right new camper.

After some research online, many trips to various RV dealers we found the ‘almost’ perfect vehicle. It was last year’s model so we were able to negotiate a good price and make it our own. We have since taken a wonderful trip along the Natchez Trace National Parkway in Mississippi and Tennessee. Last summer we took a big trip to the western states and some wonderful National Parks.

We were hoping to get away from some of the Florida heat but as with most of the globe it was quite a warm summer, even in the North West. Still it was a fabulous trip and one we will long remember.

Living in Florida is fine, particularly in the winter months but it has also renewed our interest in getting out into nature and so it was not such a bad move after all.
